Hazen
is nestled in the heart of the Sakakawea South Shore Region, just minutes from beautiful Lake Sakakawea, the Knife River Indian Villages NHS and several coal mines and energy plants. The town along the Lewis & Clark Trail has most everything the traveler needs including a well-rounded business district, a variety of restaurants, medical facilities and many other services. Hazen is located along Highway 200 midway between two North Dakota state designated Scenic Byways.

Visitors to the area are encouraged to try the authentic German menu items offered at the local restaurants. The North Dakota Legendary hospitality and the designation of being the friendliest state in the nation will offer a vacation experience far beyond your expectations!

Hazen is very proud of its camping facilities at the Lewis & Clark RV Park on West Main and at the Hazen Bay Recreation Area 12 miles to the north on beautiful Lake Sakakawea. Modern amenities second to none are available at both sites.

Things to do when visiting Hazen include a nine-hole grass green golf course, swimming pool with water slide, walking and biking paths, geo-caching, archery range, twin movie theater, indoor ice arena, hunting and fishing. The Knife River Indian Villages NHS offers a visitor center and furnished earth lodge with self-guided history and nature trails. Tours are available at the area coal mines and energy plants.

The arts are an important aspect of the community of Hazen. From painting and crafts to theater, dance and music, Hazen prides itself on the talent that abounds in the community and beyond. Several programs are available throughout the year for participation or audience enjoyment.

  • Sakakawea South Shore Community Theater
    Community Theater has enjoyed a revival the past four years with the creation of Sakakawea South Shore Community Theater. The past four summers, the organization, which includes members from Hazen and surrounding communities, has performed “Guys & Dolls,” “Oklahoma”, The Music Man” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”
  • Hazen Concert Series
    Three concerts are scheduled throughout each year. A variety of entertainment such as a cappella groups, brass ensembles, fiddle and dance, etc. is performed at the Hazen High School Theater. Membership is required. Guest passes are available from the Hazen Chamber of Commerce.
  • Jam Sessions
    Musicians gather at the Hazen City Hall the first Sunday of each month April-November to play and sing their favorite old time, gospel and patriotic tunes. The event is free to the public. Coffee and cookies are provided.
  • Music in the Park
    Entertainment is held weekly during the summer months at the Paul Weiser Memorial Park in downtown Hazen. Area musicians perform a variety of music ranging from country/bluegrass to folk to gospel. Food and beverages are served by local caterers.
  • Art & Drama Camps
    Hazen Arts Council encourages participation in the performing and visual arts. Art Camp for Kids and Drama Camp are held each summer in June. The Art Camp is for children ages 4 - 12 and the Drama Camp is open to 6th-8th grade students.
  • Jazz Night
    An annual event held in February at which the very talented Junior and Senior High Jazz Bands present a concert following a supper.
  • Germans from Russia Musikfest
    The local Germans from Russia group hosts an afternoon of fun with German singing and ethnic food.
  • Hazen Art Show
    A weekend of demonstrations, entertainment and viewing of artwork in a variety of categories is hosted by the Hazen Arts and Crafts Association.
  • Knife River Chorale
    For 52 years this group of dedicated and talented musicians has spread the message of Christmas through word and song. It is held annually at the Hazen Elementary Gym in a beautifully decorated setting.
