Come
visit and enjoy the scenic beauty of the rolling prairie and river
bottom woods. Gaze on the cottonwood and willow trees and envision
yourself as one of the early inhabitants who roamed these places
before Columbus set foot. Swim, canoe,
and fish the
Knife and Missouri Rivers as Lewis and Clark may have done. Or,
if modern times are more your style, tour one of the local electrical
generating stations and coal mines.
The
Sakakawea City Park, located on the east side of town next to the Knife
River, has primitive
campsites and electric hook-ups available. Potable water is located
at stations throughout the park also. If you have a self-contained camper,
a potable water and dump station is also available. Bring your boat and
put in at the park or at the paved
boat ramp on the Missouri River 5 minutes southeast of town. Local
fish species include Walleye, Northern Pike, Catfish, and "Stick
fish". Clean your catch at the cleaning station by the RV dumpsite
on the west edge of town.
The kids will enjoy the tennis
and basketball courts as well as the multi-use playground at the school,
two blocks west of the park. Or, try swimming in the Knife River, which
gets fairly warm in the summer months. (Sorry, no lifeguards are available).
There
are numerous length hiking
trails located at the Knife
River Indian Villages National Historic Site, located one-half mile
north of town. Some are maintained during the winter for cross
country skiing too. The
Historic Site also has an interpretive center and museum that gives
insight to the Hidatsa Indians that once inhabited this scenic place.
There are also handicapped accessible trails that lead you to what were
once the earth lodge homes of these people.
