Twin Buttes, known as the south side of the Ft. Berthold Indian Reservation, and is located 15 miles north of Halliday, along the shore of Lake Sakakwea.

Recorded history on Ft. Berthold and Twin Buttes dates back to the 1790's when early explorers came to the area and later when Lewis and Clark trekked the shoreline of and paddled the Missouri River on their way to the west coast.

However, definitive history of the Reservation begins with the Laramie Treaty of 1851 that defined the history of Hidatsa, Mandan and Arikara Indian Nation, known as Three Affiliated Tribes.

Twin Buttes, with it's 350 residents, has a K-8 School, a convenience store, a tribal office, two churches, the Twin Buttes Community Association, Head Start, Ft. Berthold Community College outreach station, and a Pow Wow grounds and camping area. They are also home to Twin Buttes Custom Homes, a major employer for the area.

The people of Twin Buttes are a very proud and friendly people who are willing to welcome visitors with open arms and show you their history and culture. Since it has been recorded that Lewis and Clark camped 13 miles north of Halliday, that campsite would now probably be located near the shoreline of Lake Sakakawea and Twin Buttes.
