Killdeer Mountain Four Bears Scenic Byway
Hwy 22 From Killdeer to the Lost Bridge on the Little Missouri River. The Killdeer byway is alleged to be the most scenic byway in western North Dakota. Called 'Mako shika' ('where the land breaks') by the Sioux, this land dips through the rugged Killdeer Mountains. The land has been sculpted into curious formations by wind, water, and sand. This is some of the North Dakota's most remarkable scenery. Additional Badlands splendor can be found in Little Missouri State Park. Most of this primitive park is only accessible by foot or horse. Backpacking and horseriding on the park's 30 miles of trails is wildly popular.
Little Missouri State Park
On the solitary access road to Little Missouri State Park, the road cuts through a sprawling prairie and cropland with little indication of park grandeur. One may have second thoughts about traveling to this particular state park. Then comes a glimpse of the badlands. No matter how fleeting the first glimpse, visitors are immediately reassured that this state park has indescribable beauty.
McKenzie Bay
North east of Killdeer. McKenzie Bay Marina is open to the public with camping, dining and convenience store. Follow the Killdeer Scenic Byway north and watch for signage to get you there.
Medicine Hole
Located on the Killdeer Mountain. At the top of the southeast spur of the Killdeer Mountains is Medicine Hole, a "cave" about 10 feet across and 90 feet deep. This was the traditional location for the place where, according to Native Americans living there, all animals and people came out of the earth at the beginning of time.
